Zoomlion builds the big yellow machines that dig, lift, and pour concrete on construction sites.
Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology is one of China's biggest makers of construction machinery. It sells the heavy equipment that builds skyscrapers, roads, bridges, and wind farms: concrete pumps that pour cement dozens of floors up, giant cranes that lift steel beams, and excavators that claw at the ground. Its customers are construction companies, real estate developers, infrastructure builders, and mining firms, mostly in China but increasingly around the world. Think of it as the hardware store for anyone building a city β except the tools weigh tons and cost millions.
The business splits into a few main buckets. Construction machinery, especially cranes and concrete equipment, brings in the largest chunk of revenue. Emerging businesses like aerial work platforms (the booms that lift workers into the air) and earthmoving machines have been growing fast, as has agricultural machinery like harvesters and tractors. The company also does a smaller financing business, lending money to customers so they can afford its machines, which is common in this industry. Altogether, Zoomlion pulls in tens of billions of yuan a year, with overseas sales climbing quickly as it pushes into markets like Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
Zoomlion started in 1992 as a spin-off from a Chinese research institute, rooted in the country's push to modernize its own equipment instead of importing everything. It grew alongside China's construction boom, then had to weather the slowdown in its home real estate market, which pushed it to look abroad and into new product lines. Today it pours some of its cash back into research, new factories, and buying smaller rivals to plug gaps in its lineup. It pays dividends and has bought back shares at times, but the main bet is simple: the world still needs to build things, and someone has to make the machines that do it.
