SK Inc.

South Korea · KRX: 034730.KS · Market cap: $6.2B

SK Inc. is a holding company that owns big stakes in chipmaking, energy, telecom, and biotech businesses.

Imagine a company that doesn't really make one thing. Instead, it owns big pieces of other companies that each make different things. That's SK Inc. It's a holding company based in Seoul, South Korea. It sits at the top of a group called SK Group, one of the country's biggest business families. SK Inc. makes money mainly by owning large stakes in its subsidiaries and collecting dividends from them, plus earning fees and its own operating income. So when you buy SK Inc. stock, you're really buying a bundle of businesses.

The biggest piece is SK Hynix, one of the world's largest memory chip makers. Chips are the group's cash engine, and they're famously boom-and-bust: prices swing hard with supply and demand. Another big piece is SK Innovation, which runs oil refining and battery businesses. There's also SK Telecom, the mobile phone carrier, and SK Biopharmaceuticals, which develops drugs for epilepsy and other conditions. Think of it as a shopping cart full of very different Korean businesses: some cyclical like chips and oil, some steady like phone service.

SK Inc. also does some things on its own, like investing in new tech and running its own environmental and semiconductor materials operations. Because it's a holding company, its stock often trades at a discount to the sum of its parts, which is common for these structures. Recent focus has been on batteries and chips, especially as electric vehicles and AI demand grow. The Company pays dividends and has done share buybacks to return cash to shareholders. Founded in 1953 as a small textile maker, it grew by buying into chemicals, telecom, and chips over decades.
