Sega Sammy Holdings Inc.

Japan Β· Tokyo: 6460 Β·Market cap:

Sega Sammy makes video games and arcade entertainment and also runs a pachinko and resort business.

Sega Sammy Holdings is a Japanese entertainment company with two very different halves. One half makes video games and amusement machines, and the other half builds and runs pachinko and pachislot machines, plus it owns a chain of hotels and resorts. Most people outside Japan know the company only through its games, through characters like Sonic the Hedgehog, Yakuza, and Persona, but the pachinko business has long been a huge money maker at home in Japan.

The game side is a global business. Studios in Japan, Europe, and the United States build games for consoles, PCs, and phones, and the company also runs arcades and sells amusement machines and prizes. Players pay once for a game, or spend money inside free-to-play games, and the company collects a cut. Sega also earns licensing fees when other companies use its famous characters. That portfolio of characters matters because a hit game can keep selling for years, and a well-known character can be turned into toys, cartoons, and movies. Sega has leaned into that by adapting Sonic into hit films and by buying studios such as Atlus, the maker of Persona, and Rovio, the maker of Angry Birds, to widen its reach into mobile gaming. The pachinko business works differently. Sega Sammy designs and sells pachinko and pachislot machines to parlors in Japan, and it earns money from the machines, from parts, and from fees tied to how much the parlors use them. This business is heavily regulated, and it depends on Japanese gambling laws that have tightened over the years. That regulatory risk is a real vulnerability: when rules change, demand for new machines can fall fast. The company has responded by investing more in resorts and hotels, including a large integrated resort project in Japan, to build a steadier source of income beyond the game and machine cycles.

So Sega Sammy is really two bets in one. The games and character business is global, growing, and driven by creative hits and licensing. The pachinko and resort business is domestic, regulated, and cyclical. The company's job is to keep the first growing fast enough to smooth out the second, while using the cash both generate to fund new games, studios, and resort investments. That makes Sega Sammy a company where a blue hedgehog and a Japanese slot machine sit under the same roof.
