JD.com, Inc.

China · HKEX: 9618 ·Market cap:

JD.com is a huge online retailer in China that sells almost everything directly to shoppers, like a Chinese combination of Amazon and a delivery company.

JD.com is one of China's biggest online shopping companies. It sells products directly to customers — everything from phones and laptops to groceries and household goods — through its own app and website. What makes it different from a marketplace is that JD buys much of the inventory itself and controls the whole chain, including delivery. Its own logistics network is a big deal: it can often get orders to customers the same day or next day, which is a major reason people choose it over rivals. Customers are mostly regular consumers, but JD also runs a big business selling to other companies and stores, supplying them with electronics, appliances, and other goods.

Think of it as a store that owns its own delivery fleet, so it can promise "order now, get it today" in a way that shops relying on outside couriers struggle to match. That speed and reliability are the heart of why shoppers pick JD. The company makes money mainly on the gap between what it pays for products and what it charges customers, plus fees from services, advertising, and its logistics business. Beyond retail, JD has pushed into faster local delivery, discount-focused shopping to compete with cheaper rivals, and a growing health and pharmacy arm. It has also spun off and invested in logistics and other units. On cash, JD has been buying back its own shares in recent years and returning money to investors, while still funding its delivery network. The biggest challenge is intense price competition in Chinese e-commerce, which squeezes margins on the retail side.
