Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology Co., Ltd.

China · HKEX: 9863 · Market cap: $7.5B

Leapmotor builds affordable electric cars and sells them mostly in China, and it also sells its EV technology to other automakers.

Leapmotor is a Chinese electric car company that mostly sells to everyday buyers who want a decent EV without paying a luxury price. Its cars are cheap compared to most electric vehicles, which is the whole point. The company makes money the plain way: it builds cars, sells them to customers through its own stores and dealers, and collects the cash. Most of its revenue comes from selling vehicles in China. Think of it as the budget-friendly option in a market full of fancy electric cars, like shopping at a discount store instead of a boutique.

Last year the company sold roughly 293,000 cars, and it has been growing fast. It also has a second, smaller business: selling its electric-car technology to other automakers. Stellantis, the giant company behind Jeep and Peugeot, invested in Leapmotor and now helps sell its cars outside China through a joint venture. That deal matters because it gives Leapmotor a way into Europe and other markets without building everything from scratch. So the business has two parts: make and sell cheap EVs, and license the tech inside them to partners.

The company was founded in 2015 and is based in Hangzhou, China. It became profitable on a quarterly basis for the first time recently, which is a big deal in the EV world, where most young carmakers lose money. It keeps costs low by making many of its own parts in-house, including batteries and motors. That is how it can sell cars for less and still make a little money. Whether it can keep growing outside China and stay profitable is the main question investors are watching.
