American Tower owns and leases cell phone towers and data centers that companies pay rent to use.
American Tower owns the physical stuff that makes wireless service work. It builds and buys tall towers, then rents space on them to mobile phone carriers, radio and TV broadcasters, and other wireless companies. Those tenants mount their antennas and equipment on the towers and pay monthly rent. Think of it as a landlord, except the apartments are spots high in the air and the tenants are signals. The company also runs a smaller but growing business renting space in data centers, the buildings full of servers that power the internet.
The tower business is the heart of the company. Roughly half of its revenue comes from the United States, with the rest spread across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. Its customers are mostly big wireless carriers who need towers but don't want to spend money building and maintaining their own. That's the appeal: renting space on a shared tower is cheaper and faster than constructing one. Once a carrier is on a tower, it tends to stay for years, which makes the rent checks reliable. American Tower started in the 1990s as a division of a radio company and grew into one of the largest tower owners in the world through steady acquisitions, including a big push into data centers in recent years. The company generates a lot of cash and uses it to keep growing and to reward shareholders. It pays a dividend and has spent billions buying towers and data center assets around the world. It also carries a heavy debt load, which is normal for a business that owns lots of physical property. One thing worth watching: the data center business is growing fast because of demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence, while the core tower business grows more slowly and faces pressure from carriers merging and spending less.
