Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited

India · NSE: APOLLOHOSP.NS · Market cap: $11.5B

Apollo runs hospitals, pharmacies, and health clinics across India, and also sells health insurance.

Apollo Hospitals makes most of its money by treating sick people. It runs one of India's biggest private hospital networks, with thousands of beds across cities like Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad. Patients pay out of pocket, or their insurance pays, for surgeries, cancer care, heart procedures, and everyday checkups. The company also runs a huge pharmacy chain, with thousands of stores selling medicines, and a growing online pharmacy and telehealth app called Apollo 24/7. On top of that, it sells health insurance through a joint venture. So think of it as three businesses under one roof: hospitals, medicine retail, and insurance.

The hospital segment is the biggest profit engine, though the pharmacy and digital businesses bring in a lot of revenue too. Hospitals typically earn higher margins because a single surgery or cancer treatment can cost thousands of dollars. The pharmacy business runs on thin margins but huge volume. Apollo 24/7 ties it together, letting people consult a doctor online, get a prescription, and have medicines delivered. The company has been pushing this digital-plus-physical model hard, because it keeps patients inside the Apollo ecosystem from the first cough to the last follow-up.

Apollo was founded in the 1980s by Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, and it helped create the idea of corporate, high-quality private healthcare in India. Today it keeps spending cash on new hospitals, more beds, and its digital platform, while also paying down debt and paying small dividends. It faces stiff competition from Max, Fortis, and Narayana Health, plus new online health startups. But its brand, size, and reach give it an edge in a country where good healthcare is still scarce for hundreds of millions of people.
