British American Tobacco p.l.c.

United Kingdom ยท LSE: BATS.L ยทMarket cap:

British American Tobacco sells cigarettes, vaping products, and oral nicotine pouches to adult consumers around the world.

British American Tobacco is one of the world's biggest tobacco companies. It sells cigarettes โ€” brands like Dunhill, Kent, Lucky Strike, and Camel outside the United States โ€” plus vaping devices, heated tobacco products, and oral nicotine pouches. Its customers are adult smokers and nicotine users, and it makes money by selling them products they use every day, often at a markup that adds up fast because nicotine is highly addictive.

The business is simple on the surface: make a pack of cigarettes for a few pennies, sell it for several dollars, and keep the difference. Cigarette volumes are shrinking in rich countries as smoking declines, but the company raises prices to protect revenue, and it now leans on "new categories" โ€” vaping, heated tobacco, and pouches โ€” to replace what cigarettes lose. Its biggest new-category bets include Vuse vapes, glo heated tobacco, and Velo pouches. It also owns a large stake in ITC , an Indian conglomerate with cigarettes and consumer goods, which throws off useful cash. The company is a cash machine, but a controversial one. Cigarettes kill people, and regulators keep tightening the screws โ€” plain packaging, advertising bans, high taxes, and in some countries outright bans or plans to phase out sales. BAT also took a huge writedown on its U.S. cigarette brands after losing a patent case over its vaping technology and as menthol rules loomed, which dented profits. It spends heavily on dividends and buybacks to keep shareholders happy, and it has been cutting costs and jobs to fund its shift toward smoke-free products.

The big question is whether the new products can grow fast enough to offset dying cigarette sales. Vaping faces its own regulatory and health scrutiny, and illegal disposable vapes have hurt legitimate players. BAT's answer is scale: it sells in more countries than almost any rival, giving it reach and pricing power that smaller players lack. For investors, it is a high-yield, slow-growth stock โ€” a bet that nicotine demand persists and that regulation, while painful, does not kill the business outright.
