Bumble Inc.

United States Β· NASDAQ: BMBL Β· Market cap: $0.9B

Bumble runs a dating app where women make the first move, plus a friend-finding app called Bumble For Friends and a professional networking app.

Bumble is a company that runs apps where people meet each other. Its main app is a dating app, also called Bumble, where the idea is that women send the first message. That one rule is the whole brand: it's meant to feel safer and less spammy than other dating apps, which appeals to a lot of women and to men who like the idea too. The company also runs Bumble For Friends, for people looking for platonic friends, and Bumble Bizz, for professional networking. Almost all of its money comes from subscriptions and one-time purchases inside these apps, like seeing who already liked you or getting your profile shown to more people.

Think of it as a nightclub where the company charges for better seats rather than charging at the door. Most users pay nothing. A smaller group pays a monthly fee β€” commonly around $15 to $50 depending on the plan and country β€” and that paying group, plus some advertising, is what funds the whole business. The apps are free to download, and the company spends heavily on marketing to keep new users coming in, so growth depends on getting people to sign up and then convincing enough of them to pay.

For years Bumble's biggest shareholder and partner was Blackstone, the private equity giant, which bought a majority stake in 2019 and took the company public in February 2021. The stock jumped on day one and then fell a long way as growth slowed and competition from Match Group's apps, especially Hinge, got tougher. In 2024 and 2025 the company cut costs, shrank its workforce, and leaned harder on its newer apps and on advertising, while also buying back a meaningful chunk of its own shares to try to support the stock. It's a real business with real cash flow, but it's a small player in a big market, and its future depends on whether enough people keep paying for a dating app built around one simple rule.
