Bending Spoons buys popular apps and makes them cheaper to run and more profitable.
Bending Spoons is a company that buys apps you probably already use, then runs them better. It doesn't build most of its products from scratch. Instead, it looks for apps with lots of loyal users but messy businesses, buys them, cuts costs, raises prices where it can, and keeps the money that flows in. Its customers are everyday people around the world who tap on its apps, and sometimes pay for subscriptions inside them. The company is based in Milan, Italy, but its users are everywhere.
Think of it as a house flipper, but for software. It finds a good house in a bad neighborhood of neglect, fixes the plumbing, and rents it out. Some of its best-known apps include Evernote, the note-taking tool; WeTransfer, the file-sharing service; and Meetup, the group-organizing app. It also owns Splice, a music sample platform, and Brightcove, a video streaming company. A big chunk of revenue comes from subscriptions and in-app purchases, with the rest from ads and business tools. The exact split changes often because the company keeps buying new things.
Bending Spoons started in 2013 with a few Italian founders making their own apps, and one early hit was a video editor called Splice (different from the music one). Over time, it shifted from making apps to buying them. That shift turned it into a serial acquirer with a reputation for squeezing profit out of products others gave up on. It listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange, which gave it a new currency, its own shares, to help pay for more deals. It uses the cash its apps generate to buy even more apps, and it doesn't pay a dividend. The big risks are simple: users may quit if prices rise too much, and buying too many companies too fast can get messy.
