B2Gold Corp.

Canada · NYSE American: BTG ·Market cap:

B2Gold is a gold mining company that digs gold out of the ground at mines in Africa and Asia and sells it at the going market price.

B2Gold is a gold miner. It owns and runs open-pit mines in countries like Mali, Namibia, and the Philippines, pulls out ore, processes it into gold bars, and sells those bars at the global gold price. The company does not sell anything special or branded — gold is a commodity, so a B2Gold bar is worth exactly the same as anyone else's. That means B2Gold has almost no control over the price it gets paid; it just tries to dig the stuff up as cheaply as possible so the gap between its costs and the gold price is nice and wide.

The business is best understood as a margin machine. Mining gold is expensive — you move huge amounts of rock, run big machines, pay workers, and manage a lot of risk. If gold sells for, say, $2,000 an ounce and it costs you $1,200 to produce an ounce, that $800 gap is your profit, multiplied by however many ounces you sell. B2Gold's real skill is keeping that production cost low and keeping its mines running without accidents or shutdowns. When gold prices rise, the company makes a lot more money very quickly; when they fall, profits can shrink fast. The big risk is location. Its mines sit in countries with complicated politics, and in recent years one of its most important assets — the Fekola mine in Mali — has been caught up in a dispute with that country's government over taxes, permits, and ownership terms. That kind of thing is a reminder that a gold mine is only as valuable as your legal right to keep operating it. B2Gold also owns the Goose project in Canada's far north, a major new mine it has been building to add a safer, home-country source of gold.

Unlike many miners, B2Gold has historically paid a dividend and bought back shares, returning some of its cash to owners rather than pouring everything into new holes in the ground. Gold miners are a strange business: they produce a metal that does nothing and pays no interest, yet people pay real money for it, and the companies that dig it up can be wildly profitable or deeply disappointing depending on costs, politics, and the gold price. B2Gold is a mid-sized player trying to keep its costs down and its mines safe while riding those swings.
