Capgemini SE

France ยท Euronext Paris: CAP.PA ยทMarket cap:

Capgemini is a big consulting and technology services company that helps other organizations plan, build, and run their computer systems and digital projects.

Capgemini is a global services firm that large organizations hire when their technology gets complicated. If a bank needs to move its systems to the cloud, a carmaker wants to connect its vehicles to the internet, or a government agency needs help untangling decades of old software, Capgemini sends in teams of consultants and engineers to figure it out and do the work. It sits in the same room as the giants of IT services โ€” Accenture, IBM, and Infosys โ€” competing for the big contracts that keep the modern corporate world running.

The business runs on two big engines. The first is consulting: smart people who walk into a client's office, study the mess, and write the plan. The second, and much larger in terms of revenue, is what the industry calls "application services" โ€” teams that actually build, maintain, and update the software a company depends on. Imagine a retailer with thousands of little programs running its stores, warehouses, and website; Capgemini keeps those programs alive, fixes them when they break, and slowly modernizes them, often from delivery centers in India and Eastern Europe where the engineering talent is deep and the costs are lower. Clients pay for this on long-term contracts, sometimes stretching for years, which makes Capgemini's revenue fairly steady once the work is won. The company has been on a quiet acquisition spree that reshaped what it sells. It bought Altran, an engineering-services firm, in 2020, which pushed Capgemini deeper into designing physical products โ€” chips, cars, medical devices โ€” not just software. More recently it has leaned into artificial intelligence, striking partnerships with Microsoft and Amazon and building out "AI agents" that automate chunks of client work. That is both an opportunity and a threat: clients love the efficiency, but if AI shrinks the number of people needed to run a system, it could eat into the very labor-heavy contracts Capgemini lives on. Rivals like Accenture are racing down the same road.

The money is real and the company returns a good chunk of it to shareholders. Capgemini generated about โ‚ฌ22 billion in revenue in 2024, and it pays a dividend while also buying back its own shares โ€” in 2024 the company repurchased roughly 2% of its stock. The honest picture: this is a steady, moderately profitable business, not a rocket ship. Its margins are decent but thinner than pure software firms, because so much of the work is done by people whose salaries are the biggest cost. The bet investors are making is that Capgemini can keep winning big contracts, and that its AI push lets it sell more while keeping a lid on headcount โ€” a tricky balance for a company whose entire model has been built on selling brainpower by the hour.
