Dino Polska S.A.

Poland · Warsaw: DNP · Market cap: $4.9B

Dino Polska runs a fast-growing chain of small grocery stores across Poland.

Dino Polska is a grocery store chain in Poland. It runs more than 2,600 small supermarkets, mostly in towns and villages where big hypermarkets don't bother to go. Think of it as the friendly neighborhood store that somehow has everything you need at a price that beats the big city competition. Customers pay at the till, and Dino makes money on the thin margin between what it pays suppliers and what shoppers pay. It has been growing fast by opening hundreds of new stores every year and by selling more to existing customers. Revenue has been climbing at roughly 15 to 20 percent annually, which is remarkable for a grocery business.

The company owns most of its stores and its own distribution centers, which keeps costs low and control tight. It also owns a meat processing plant, so it can sell fresh sausages and cold cuts under its own brand. About 70 percent of what it sells is food, and the rest is things like cleaning products and cosmetics. Dino's customers are ordinary Polish families who value convenience and low prices. They choose Dino because it's close, it's cheap, and it's open when they need it. Unlike many competitors, Dino doesn't franchise. Every store is company-owned, which means it keeps all the profit but also pays all the costs.

Founded in 1999 by Tomasz Biernacki, Dino started as a small local chain and grew steadily before listing on the Warsaw Stock Exchange in 2017. The stock has been one of the best performers on the Polish market since then. The company reinvests most of its cash back into opening new stores and building warehouses, rather than paying dividends. That reinvestment is the engine of its growth. If you want a simple picture, imagine a business that builds a new store every day and a half, fills it with groceries, and watches customers come back week after week.
