DouYu runs a live-streaming website where people watch others play video games and chat in real time.
DouYu is one of China's biggest live-streaming platforms, and its main attraction is watching other people play video games. You open the app, pick a streamer, and watch them play in real time while a flood of comments and virtual gifts scrolls past. It is part game-watching, part talk show, and part online hangout, and the audience is mostly young Chinese gamers.
The business earns money in two main ways. First, viewers buy virtual coins and spend them on digital gifts — rockets, planes, and other badges — that they toss at streamers during a broadcast, and DouYu keeps a cut of that spending. Second, it sells advertising and runs e-sports tournaments and other sponsored events. The people paying are the viewers who buy gifts and the brands and game companies that want to reach them. DouYu's edge comes from its deep ties to the gaming world. It signed big-name streamers and locked up broadcasting rights for major e-sports competitions, so fans come for the stars and the tournaments they can't watch elsewhere. Its main rival is Huya, a similar platform, and the two companies once tried to merge — a deal that Chinese regulators blocked in 2021 over antitrust concerns. That left DouYu fighting Huya and fast-growing short-video apps like Douyin and Bilibili for the same viewers and their attention. The numbers show the strain. Revenue has slid in recent years as the gift-buying slows and competition for eyeballs intensifies, and the company has leaned on cost-cutting to stay profitable. A key vulnerability is its dependence on a handful of top streamers; if a star leaves for a rival, fans often follow. DouYu sits in a tough spot: it owns a loyal gaming audience, but turning all that watching into steady money is the hard part.
