Fortis Healthcare runs a network of hospitals and diagnostic labs across India that treat patients and charge them for medical care.
Fortis Healthcare is one of India's big private hospital groups. It runs a chain of hospitals โ roughly two dozen of them โ in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai, and it also owns a large network of diagnostic labs called Agilus. Its customers are regular people who need surgery, cancer treatment, heart care, or a simple blood test, plus the insurance companies and employers who often foot the bill. It makes money by charging for hospital beds, operations, doctor consultations, and lab tests. Hospitals bring in the bulk of revenue โ about three-quarters โ while the diagnostics business contributes the rest.
Think of it as a giant medical mall: you come in for one thing, whether that's a knee replacement or a CT scan, and the whole ecosystem โ surgeons, nurses, machines, labs โ is under one roof, which is convenient and also lets Fortis charge more than a standalone clinic. The business is capital-heavy: each new hospital costs a fortune to build and takes years to fill with patients. But once a hospital is busy, the profits are steady and cash keeps flowing. The company is controlled by IHH Healthcare, a big Malaysian hospital group, which took charge in 2018 after a messy takeover battle. Before that, Fortis had grown through acquisitions, including buying the diagnostics chain Agilus, which now does millions of tests a year.
These days, Fortis is focused on filling beds, expanding into smaller cities, and growing Agilus's lab network, which had been sluggish. It's also cleaning up its finances โ reducing debt and improving margins โ and the market has noticed, with the stock riding a rally in Indian healthcare. It pays no meaningful dividend, so the cash it generates mostly goes back into new beds, new machines, and lab expansion. In short, Fortis is a bet on Indians spending more on private healthcare as the country gets richer.
