IREN runs giant warehouses full of computers that mine Bitcoin and rent out artificial-intelligence computing power.
IREN Limited is a computer landlord for two very hungry kinds of customers: people who mine Bitcoin and companies that need to train and run artificial-intelligence models. Roughly speaking, most of its revenue today still comes from mining Bitcoin β it runs rows of specialized machines that solve puzzles to earn coins β while a fast-growing slice comes from renting out space and computing power to AI customers. The company owns its own data centers and, importantly, controls a large supply of cheap electricity, mostly in Texas. Power is the single biggest cost in both businesses, so getting it cheap is the whole game. It sells something simple: massive amounts of electricity converted into computing.
Think of it as a factory that buys electricity in bulk and turns it into digital money and digital brainpower. What makes IREN unusual is that it didn't buy a bunch of random power deals β it locked up large, connected sites with access to cheap energy, then built big buildings on top of them. That gives it a head start as demand for AI computing explodes. Recently, the company has been pivoting hard toward AI hosting: it signed a multi-billion-dollar deal with Microsoft to provide cloud computing capacity, using Nvidia's latest graphics chips, with the first chunk of revenue expected to start flowing in 2026. That deal, plus similar ones with other customers, is why investors got so excited β IREN is suddenly viewed less as a Bitcoin miner and more as an AI infrastructure landlord. Historic mining performance has been lumpy because Bitcoin prices and something called the "halving" (which cuts mining rewards in half every four years) swing profits around. The company mostly reinvests its cash into building more data centers rather than paying dividends, though it has done some share buybacks.
IREN was founded in Australia in 2019, originally focused on running Bitcoin mining machines powered by renewable energy, and it listed on the Nasdaq in 2021. Its founders include brothers Daniel and Will Roberts. The bet has always been the same: control power, control the machines, and let the use case shift from mining coins to training AI. That shift is now the main story.
