Understand any stock in simple English
Enter a ticker to learn what the company does and how it makes money.
It is a big, low-cost fund that lets ordinary investors buy a tiny slice of roughly 2,000 small American companies in one trade.
The iShares Russell 2000 ETF is not really a company in the normal sense โ it is a giant basket you can buy like a single stock. Own one share and you own a tiny sliver of about 2,000 small public companies in the United States. People use it to bet on small American businesses without having to pick which ones will win.
Here is the problem it solves. Small companies are hard to buy one by one, and choosing the right ones is even harder. So a company called BlackRock runs this fund, which simply copies an index called the Russell 2000. That index tracks the smaller end of the U.S. stock market, generally companies below the biggest 1,000 firms. The fund buys the stocks in that index, so its performance roughly matches theirs. The money comes from a small annual fee, charged as a slice of the money you invest. It is a cheap, passive product โ you are paying for convenience and instant diversification, not for a team of experts picking stocks. The ETF trades on NYSE Arca, which means you can buy or sell it any time the market is open. Its size and low cost make it a default choice for people who want small-cap exposure.
The appeal is diversification and simplicity: one ticker replaces two thousand stock picks. The risk is equally simple. Small companies are more fragile than giants like Microsoft or Apple, so this fund tends to swing harder in both directions. It is a small-cap bet in a tidy package, not a safe place to park money.
