Japan Tobacco Inc.

Japan Β·Market cap:

Japan Tobacco sells cigarettes and other tobacco products around the world, and also runs a big prescription-drug business.

Japan Tobacco is one of the world's largest cigarette makers, selling brands like Winston, Camel, Mevius, and LD. It sells most of its cigarettes outside Japan, where smoking has been shrinking for years, so it leans on overseas markets for growth. At home it still dominates the Japanese cigarette market, a position it inherited from a former government monopoly.

The company makes money the way tobacco companies always have: it buys leaf, rolls cigarettes, and sells them at a markup, collecting most of the price as taxes along the way. Cigarettes are cheap to make but heavily taxed and regulated, which is why the business throws off huge amounts of cash. It also sells reduced-risk products like heated tobacco sticks, an area where it has lagged rivals such as Philip Morris International and British American Tobacco. The other big piece is pharmaceuticals. Through its JT subsidiaries, the company sells prescription medicines, including drugs for immune disorders and heart disease, and it is investing in this segment to offset falling cigarette volumes. That diversification matters because smoking keeps declining in rich countries, and regulators keep tightening the rules.

Japan Tobacco uses its cash to pay fat dividends and buy back shares β€” it has repurchased billions of dollars of stock over the years. It has also made acquisitions to grow overseas, such as buying the non-Russian operations of Imperial Brands in 2024 after exiting Russia. The core tension is simple: a shrinking, controversial business that still gushes cash, and a drug arm trying to become the next engine.
