JSW Energy Limited

India ยท NSE: JSWENERGY.NS ยท Market cap: $13.5B

JSW Energy makes and sells electricity to Indian homes, businesses, and governments.

JSW Energy is one of India's biggest private electricity producers. It builds power plants โ€” mostly ones that burn coal, plus growing numbers that use wind and sunshine โ€” and then sells the electricity to state governments, big factories, and ordinary homes through long contracts that can last 25 years. That steady, boring, predictable stream of payments is the whole business.

Think of it as owning a toll bridge: you spend a lot of money to build it, then collect small payments for decades with very few surprises.

The interesting part is what's changing. Coal plants still make up most of the company's capacity and profits today, but India is racing to add clean power, and JSW Energy is spending billions to join in โ€” buying wind farms, solar parks, and even a company that makes the equipment for green hydrogen. It recently agreed to buy a controlling stake in KSK Mahanadi Power, a large coal plant, mostly because the plant comes with cheap, locked-in fuel and a ready customer. That mix โ€” old coal cash funding a renewable future โ€” is the central bet. The company keeps some cash for dividends and pays down debt with the rest, which matters because power plants are expensive to build and heavy to carry.

The founder is Sajjan Jindal, part of the JSW Group, a family-run Indian industrial giant that started in steel. Power was a natural next step: if you already dig coal and run furnaces, generating electricity isn't a huge leap. JSW Energy listed on Indian stock exchanges in 2010. Its customers rarely switch suppliers because electricity isn't a preference โ€” it's a necessity โ€” and the state contracts make switching nearly impossible anyway.
