Miniso sells cheap, cute lifestyle products — toys, cosmetics, home goods — through thousands of small branded stores around the world.
Miniso is a discount variety retailer. It runs small, brightly lit stores stuffed with low-priced everyday items: plush toys, pens, phone cables, snacks, cosmetics, and kitchen gadgets. Most things cost a few dollars. The pitch is simple: cute design at a price low enough that you buy something on impulse, even if you walked in for nothing.
The company makes most of its money by selling goods wholesale to the operators of its stores, rather than by running every shop itself. That matters. In China, most Miniso stores are run by outside franchisees who put up the cash, pay rent, and staff the place, while Miniso supplies the products and takes a cut. Overseas, Miniso keeps a bigger share of stores under its own control, which gives it more profit per store but also more rent and payroll risk. It also earns franchise and licensing fees. The real engine is its supply chain: Miniso designs products with thousands of Chinese factories, orders in huge volumes, and uses its scale to keep costs tiny. The stores themselves are the marketing. Miniso puts them in malls and busy streets, often next to bigger brands, and leans on the "treasure hunt" feel — you never know what novelty you'll find. Its closest rivals are other value retailers and online marketplaces, and in China the giant e-commerce platforms are a constant threat. Miniso has pushed hard into "blind boxes" — sealed surprise toys — through its Top Toy chain, riding a collecting craze that has been a big growth driver. The company is headquartered in Guangzhou and listed in New York. It has grown fast by opening stores abroad, especially across Asia and Latin America, and it has spent money buying back its own shares in recent years. The honest caveats: discount retail is a low-margin, copycat business, fakes and lookalike competitors are everywhere, and Miniso's fortunes are tied to consumer spending and mall traffic. It is a real, profitable business — just one built on selling a lot of very cheap, very cute things.
