Planet Labs PBC

United States Β· NYSE: PL Β· Market cap: $757M

Planet Labs runs a fleet of small satellites that photograph the entire Earth every day and sells that imagery and analysis to governments and businesses.

Planet Labs is a satellite company. It builds and launches lots of small satellites β€” cheaper and simpler than the big ones traditional aerospace firms use β€” and flies them in a group around the planet. Every day, these satellites photograph the entire land surface of Earth. The company then sells that fresh imagery, plus software that helps customers spot changes over time, like a new building, a moving ship, or a drying lake. Customers are mostly governments and defense agencies, plus a growing number of businesses in farming, forestry, energy, and finance. Governments pay for steady, wide-area monitoring; companies pay because seeing the world from above is cheaper and faster than sending people to look.

Think of it as a daily satellite photo of the whole planet, sold by subscription. Instead of one expensive camera taking occasional shots, Planet has hundreds of small ones taking constant pictures, so you can watch things change day by day. The biggest chunk of revenue comes from the U.S. government and allied defense customers, with the rest spread across commercial and civil users. The company also owns a piece of a European satellite maker, which adds revenue and gives it a foothold in institutional programs.

Planet went public in 2021 by merging with a blank-check company, and it's still small and not yet consistently profitable. It spends heavily on building and replacing satellites, so it uses its cash to reinvest in the fleet and to keep enough money on hand rather than paying dividends or buying back stock. Its bet is that as launches get cheaper and demand for daily Earth data grows, the business scales into steady profits. Recent focus areas include defense contracts, AI tools that turn raw images into answers, and partnerships that put its data into other companies' software.
