PP Prime is a Thai company that makes animal feed for farmed shrimp and fish, and it also runs a small chain of fried-chicken restaurants.
PP Prime is a Thai company with two very different jobs under one roof. The bigger one is making food for farmed animals โ mainly shrimp and fish raised in ponds and cages. The smaller one is selling fried chicken to hungry people through a chain of shops.
Start with the feed. Shrimp farming is a fussy business. A shrimp pond is basically a giant, salty soup, and if the feed is wrong or the water turns bad, the animals get sick and die. So shrimp farmers need feed that is consistent and clean and that makes the shrimp grow fast. PP Prime makes that feed and sells it to farmers, who buy it again and again because feed is one of their single biggest costs. The company also makes feed for other aquatic animals and has pushed into pet food, which is a growing market in Thailand. The restaurant side is the odd sibling. The company runs fried-chicken shops under the brand name Five Star, selling crispy chicken to everyday Thai customers at prices that compete with street food and big chains. Running restaurants is a totally different game from running a feed mill โ one depends on farms and fishmeal prices, the other depends on foot traffic and food costs โ and the restaurant business has been a much smaller piece of the story.
PP Prime is a small company with a messy past. It was once known by another name and has gone through losses, restructuring, and shifts in strategy, so it is not a blue chip. Thai shrimp farming is also a tough, cyclical industry: disease outbreaks, weak shrimp prices, and cheap imports can all crush farmers' budgets, and when farmers cut back, feed orders shrink too. That makes the company's fortunes ride on the health of Thailand's aquaculture sector. It competes with larger, better-funded feed makers, and its small size means it has less room to absorb a bad year.
