Sanoma Oyj

🇫🇮 Finland · Helsinki: SANOMA.HE · Market cap: $1.3B

Sanoma sells textbooks, news, and advertising space in Finland and the Netherlands.

Sanoma Oyj is a Finnish media and education company with two very different businesses under one roof. The bigger one is learning: it makes textbooks, digital teaching materials, and testing tools for schools, mostly in Finland and the Netherlands. Schools and teachers pay for these materials, and because curriculums change and contracts renew, this part of the business is steady and predictable. Think of it as the company that sells the books and online homework platforms your school can't run without.

The other side is media. Sanoma owns newspapers, magazines, and TV and radio stations in Finland, plus a string of news brands in the Netherlands. It makes money in two main ways: readers paying for subscriptions and news, and advertisers paying to reach those readers. The news side gives Sanoma a big audience, but advertising revenue rises and falls with the economy, which makes it the bumpier half of the company. Learning brings in roughly two-thirds of the money, while media provides the rest.

The company traces back to 1857, when it was founded as a book publisher in Helsinki. Today, the big strategic push is digital learning—software, online courses, and data tools that schools keep buying year after year. Sanoma uses the cash its steady learning business throws off to invest in that digital shift and pay dividends to shareholders. The main risk is that when ad spending slows, the media side shrinks, so the reliable textbook business has to carry more of the weight.
