Virgin Galactic sells tickets to people who want to fly to the edge of space.
Virgin Galactic is a space tourism company. It sells seats on a rocket-powered spaceplane that takes passengers about 50 miles up, high enough to feel weightless for a few minutes and see the curve of the Earth against the black of space. The flight lasts around 90 minutes from takeoff to landing. Customers pay for the thrill and the bragging rights of calling themselves astronauts. Early ticket prices were $200,000, then rose to $450,000. The company is headquartered in Tustin, California, with its spaceport in New Mexico.
The business today is simple on paper but hard in practice. Virgin Galactic has one main revenue source: selling future flights. It is not yet flying commercial passengers regularly. It paused flights in 2023 to build a new class of ships called Delta, which are designed to fly more often and cost less to operate. Until those ships are ready, roughly 2026, revenue is minimal and the company burns cash. Think of it as a restaurant that has taken reservations but closed the kitchen to renovate. The reservations are real, but the money does not flow until the doors reopen.
The company was founded in 2004 by Sir Richard Branson, partly as a way to make space access feel personal and fun rather than government-only. It went public in 2019 through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company. Its main costs are building and testing vehicles and paying engineers. It has no meaningful free cash flow yet, so it relies on cash reserves and new financing to keep going. The big question is whether it can finish the Delta ships and start flying customers often enough to turn ticket sales into a real business. Until then, it is a story stock, not a cash machine.
