Yum China runs fast-food restaurants in China, most famously KFC and Pizza Hut, and sells fried chicken, pizza, coffee, and other food to millions of customers.
Yum China is the biggest restaurant company in China. Its main business is KFC — and in China, KFC is not a small chicken chain but a giant everyday habit, with thousands of stores selling fried chicken, burgers, rice dishes, and breakfast to people who want a quick, cheap, reliable meal. The company also runs Pizza Hut, which in China is a sit-down restaurant for families and groups rather than a delivery-first pizza shop, plus a smaller coffee business called Luckin-style chains and its own coffee brand, and a few other restaurant brands.
The company does not own the KFC or Pizza Hut brand names globally. It licenses them from Yum! Brands, the American parent, and pays a fee for the right to use them in China. Yum China was spun off from Yum! Brands in 2016 and listed on the New York Stock Exchange, so it is a separate company with its own management, even though the brand names and some history are shared. Most of its money comes from running its own restaurants and selling food directly to customers — in stores, through drive-thrus, and increasingly through delivery apps and its own digital ordering. Delivery is a big deal in China, and Yum China built its own delivery network rather than relying entirely on outside apps, which lets it keep more of the money and control the experience. It also collects fees from franchisees who run some stores under its brands. The business is huge but not glamorous: thin margins per meal, enormous volume, and a constant need to open new stores and keep prices low enough for everyday customers. Its main risks are competition from local chains and delivery platforms, China's slower economy and cautious consumer spending, and food-safety scares, which can hurt trust fast. Still, KFC's scale and brand recognition give it a powerful position — it is one of the few restaurant companies that can open thousands of stores in China and still find room for more.
