Genius Sports Limited

United Kingdom ยท NYSE: GENI ยทMarket cap:

Genius Sports collects and sells the official data and video feeds from sports leagues, and sells software that sportsbooks and teams use to run and protect their games.

Genius Sports sits at the center of the sports betting economy, but it does not take bets itself. It collects the raw material that sportsbooks need โ€” official play-by-play data and live video from leagues like the NFL, English Premier League football, and NASCAR โ€” and sells it to betting companies, media outlets, and the leagues themselves. If you have ever watched a live odds line move on your phone a split second after a goal, there is a decent chance Genius Sports was the pipe that carried that fact from the stadium to your screen.

The company has two main engines. The first is its betting business: it pays leagues for the exclusive right to be the official data collector, then pays people at the stadium or uses computer vision to log every pass, foul, and score in real time, and sells that feed to sportsbooks around the world. The second is a software business built largely from its 2021 purchase of Second Spectrum, which tracks players and balls using cameras and computer vision. Teams and leagues use that to scout opponents, broadcasters use it to draw fancy on-screen graphics, and coaches use it to see things the naked eye misses. Genius also sells tools that help sportsbooks spot suspicious betting patterns and comply with regulators. The moat is exclusivity. Leagues sign multi-year deals granting Genius the official data rights, and once a sportsbook builds its products around that feed, switching is painful. But the flip side is that Genius must keep winning those rights at auction, and the price tags are enormous โ€” the company spent heavily to lock up the NFL and English football, which is why it has sometimes reported losses even as revenue grew quickly. Its main rival in official data collection is Sportradar, and the two companies fight league by league for the same contracts.

Genius is headquartered in London but listed in New York, and it has grown fast as more American states legalized sports betting. A key vulnerability: if a major league decides to hand its data rights to someone else, or bring the collection in-house, a big chunk of the business walks out the door. The company has responded by pushing deeper into the software and team-tracking side, which is stickier and less dependent on winning one auction. Still, the core truth is simple โ€” Genius Sports is a toll booth on the road between a live sports event and a bettor's wallet, and its fortunes rise and fall with how much leagues charge for that toll.
