Sportradar Group AG

Switzerland ยท NASDAQ: SRAD ยทMarket cap:

Sportradar collects live sports data and sells it, along with betting-related software and integrity services, to sportsbooks, media companies, and sports leagues.

Sportradar is a sports data company. It pays people to sit at stadiums and arenas around the world, watching games in person and typing what happens into a computer the instant it happens โ€” a goal, a foul, a point, a yellow card. That live feed is the raw material for almost everything the company sells.

Its biggest customers are sportsbooks, the companies that take bets on games. To offer a bet on whether the next corner kick happens in the next five minutes, a bookmaker needs to know exactly what is happening right now, and needs odds that update constantly. Sportradar supplies both: the live data and the software that turns that data into betting markets. It also sells data and stats to media companies and sports leagues themselves. The pitch is simple โ€” leagues and bookmakers could try to collect this themselves, but Sportradar already has scouts at hundreds of thousands of matches a year, far cheaper than anyone could build alone. There is a second, less obvious business: integrity. Sportradar monitors betting patterns to spot match-fixing and sells that monitoring to leagues and regulators who want their sports to stay clean. That work also gives the company a seat at the table with the leagues, which helps it win the rights to their official data in the first place. Betting is the engine of the business, and it grows when more places legalize sports betting, especially in the United States, where the company has been expanding.

The uncomfortable part is that Sportradar's fortune is tied to an industry many people have mixed feelings about, and it faces real competition from rivals like Genius Sports and DraftKings-owned data operations. The company is headquartered in Switzerland but runs much of its operation out of the United States, where the legal-betting boom is the main growth story.
